Practical Travel Tips & FAQ for Southern Vietnam

When is the best time to visit Southern Vietnam?

Answer:
Unlike Northern Vietnam, the South has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons:

  • The Dry Season (November to April): This is the best time to visit. The weather is sunny and the humidity is low, making it perfect for exploring Ho Chi Minh City or relaxing in Phu Quoc.

  • The Wet Season (May to October): You can expect short, heavy afternoon rains. However, the landscapes in the Mekong Delta are lush and green, and the fruit orchards are at their peak. It remains warm year-round (average 28-30°C).

Answer:
To truly experience the region, we recommend at least 5 to 7 days:

  • 2 days for Ho Chi Minh City and the Cu Chi Tunnels.

  • 2 to 3 days to explore the heart of the Mekong Delta (Ben Tre, Can Tho, and the floating markets).

  • 3+ days if you wish to add a beach extension in Phu Quoc or Con Dao islands.

Answer:
The best way is a mix of land and water! At Explore Travel, we prioritize private boat trips to take you away from the tourist crowds. We also recommend cycling through the small island paths and staying at a local homestay for an authentic glimpse into the “River Life.”

Answer:
Absolutely! The South is very welcoming for families. The distances between attractions are shorter than in the North, and the activities—like boat rides in the Mekong or the interactive War Remnants Museum—are engaging for all ages. Plus, the Southern beaches are among the safest and calmest in the country.

Answer:
Southern cuisine is known for being slightly sweeter and uses lots of fresh herbs and coconut milk. Don’t miss:

  • Com Tam: Broken rice with grilled pork (a Saigon staple).

  • Banh Xeo: Sizzling savory pancakes filled with shrimp and pork.

  • Hu Tieu: A flavorful noodle soup typical of the Mekong region.

  • Fresh Fruits: The Mekong Delta is the “fruit bowl” of Vietnam—try the pomelo, durian, and mangosteen!

Answer:
You have two great options:

  • By Flight: There are direct flights from Can Tho to Phu Quoc (approx. 45 mins).

  • By Ferry: If you are near the border with Cambodia, you can take a high-speed ferry from the towns of Rach Gia or Ha Tien.
