Just 90 minutes south of Ho Chi Minh City, Can Gio is a world apart. Recognised by UNESCO as an International Biosphere Reserve in 2000, this 75,740-hectare mangrove forest is the largest rehabilitated mangrove forest in Vietnam and one of the most accessible natural wonders in Southeast Asia. Walk 5 km through the forest, feed hundreds of long-tailed monkeys, board a speedboat past mangrove channels to an oyster and cockle farm, try your hand at fishing for mudskippers and gobies and enjoy a Vietnamese lunch prepared in the jungle.

Hotel pickup in Ho Chi Minh City

Pick-up at your hotel and drive southeast along a well-paved road toward Can Gio district, approximately 1.5 hours from the city center.

Morning

Can Gio Mangrove Forest — exhibition and forest walk

Start with an exhibition of photos and models showcasing the natural landscapes, animals and plants of the reserve. Then set off on a 5 km walk through the forest and observe hundreds of wild long-tailed monkeys in their natural habitat. Feed them, photograph them and watch their extraordinary behavior. Keep an eye out for wild boars, deer and exotic birds along the way.

Morning

Lookout tower and optional activities

Climb the lookout tower for a panoramic view over the entire mangrove canopy. Optional kayaking and cycling available in the sightseeing areas.

Late morning

Speedboat to the oyster and cockle farm

Board a speedboat for an exciting ride through the narrow mangrove channels, past floating villages to a local farm where workers raise blood cockle and oysters in the tidal flats.

Fishing — mudskippers and spotted gobies

Try your hand at catching mudskippers and spotted gobies using traditional local techniques on the riverbank. Your catch can be cooked at the restaurant for a small additional fee (40,000 VND/kg).

A delicious Vietnamese lunch prepared fresh at the jungle restaurant. Use the swimming pool and shower room before heading back. Sugar cane juice and water included.

Afternoon

Mango gardens and return to Saigon

Stop at local mango gardens to buy fresh mangoes before driving back to Ho Chi Minh City. Return to hotel around 17:00.
